The Long Journey from Michigan Tom Brady was born in San Mateo, California, in 1977 and grew up watching Joe Montana lead the San Francisco 49ers. He attended the University of Michigan but had to compete continually for the starting quarterback position. Brady eventually started 25 consecutive games and completed a 20–5 record across his final two college seasons. His Michigan career finished with 5,351 passing yards and several memorable comeback victories. His final college appearance came against Alabama in the Orange Bowl. Michigan twice trailed by 14 points, but Brady threw for 369 yards and four touchdowns to force overtime. The Wolverines won 35–34, offering an early demonstration of his late-game confidence. Professional teams remained uncertain about Brady’s athletic potential. New England eventually selected him with the 199th pick in the sixth round of the 2000 draft. He began as a reserve but received an opportunity when Drew Bledsoe was injured during the following season. Six Championships in New England Brady led the Patriots to Super Bowl XXXVI during his first season as the starting quarterback. With the game tied against the St. Louis Rams, he completed the late passes required to set up a winning field goal. New England won 20–17, and Brady received the championship-game MVP award. Further victories followed against Carolina and Philadelphia. The Patriots won three championships across four seasons, establishing a dynasty built around Brady, head coach Bill Belichick and a team capable of adapting to different opponents. Brady produced one of the great regular seasons in 2007, throwing 50 touchdown passes as New England completed a 16–0 record. The Patriots reached the Super Bowl at 18–0 but lost to the New York Giants, preventing an unbeaten championship campaign. New England returned to the top following the 2014 season, defeating Seattle in Super Bowl XLIX. The Patriots then completed a historic comeback against Atlanta two years later, recovering from 28–3 behind to win the first overtime Super Bowl. A sixth New England championship followed against the Los Angeles Rams after the 2018 season. Across two decades with the Patriots, Brady appeared in nine Super Bowls and won six. Choosing a New Beginning in Tampa Brady entered free agency in 2020 and chose to join Tampa Bay. He was 42 years old, had spent his entire career in one system and was moving to a team that had not reached the playoffs for 13 seasons. The Buccaneers already possessed talented receivers including Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Rob Gronkowski came out of retirement to reunite with Brady, while Leonard Fournette and Antonio Brown joined a group capable of attacking opponents in several ways. Brady passed for 4,633 yards and 40 touchdowns during his first Tampa Bay regular season. The touchdown total established a franchise record and helped the Buccaneers finish 11–5. Tampa Bay did not win its division, so every conference playoff game had to be played away from home. That route created a demanding test for a team still developing its understanding of a new quarterback and offence. The Road to Super Bowl LV The Buccaneers defeated Washington 31–23 in their opening playoff game. Brady threw for 381 yards and two touchdowns, helping Tampa Bay secure its first postseason victory since its previous championship run. The next round brought a meeting with New Orleans and Drew Brees. Tampa Bay’s defence created turnovers, while Brady contributed two touchdown passes and a rushing score during a 30–20 victory. In the NFC Championship Game, the Buccaneers travelled to Green Bay to face Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. Brady completed a memorable touchdown pass to Scotty Miller shortly before half-time, giving Tampa Bay an important advantage. The Buccaneers protected their lead and won 31–26. Tampa Bay had won three consecutive away playoff games and now had the unusual opportunity to compete for the championship at its own stadium. Defeating Kansas City at Home Super Bowl LV placed Tampa Bay against defending champion Kansas City. Brady delivered a cal
